The Collins English Dictionary defines the term “soft skills” as “desirable qualities for certain forms of employment that do not depend on acquired knowledge. Soft skills refer to a character trait which complements person’s hard skills at the workplace. According to sociologists, soft skills can also be defined as EQ (EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT). Soft skills have more to do with a person’s character instead of his/her knowledge. As compared to ‘Hard Skills’, soft skills are difficult to acquire and change. Attributes which compiles soft skills are 1-Good Manners, 2-Optimism, 3-Common sense, 4-Sense of humor, 5-Empathy. Situational awareness and presence of mind are also involved in soft skills. A person with Good Communication skills, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills can take leadership and articulate his goals. Soft Skills are also possessed by inheritance.
On one side there are people whom we approach every time and on another hand, there are the people whom we tend to avoid. This difference is because of their attitude and personality which they gain through their experience or informative knowledge. We know these people are capable because we pursue with their people skills i.e how they interact, influence, communicate and above all create kind of environment in which people are happy, comfortable.
Soft skills have two categories:-
Self Management Skills-
Soft skill management includes stress management, self-confidence, and emotional control.
Skill to make out how people receive us and our work and ideas.An example of these skills is leadership qualities, communication skills, teamwork skills and ability to deal with different personalities.
Soft skills take time to improve.
There are few tips to improve them:-
We need to understand why we react in a particular manner.
2-Understand other people’s motive
We shouldn’t get into any conflict with motivation or trigger our or other person’s insecurity to avoid getting into any difficult situations.We should understand other’s perspective before concluding.
3-Don’t try to achieve too much in one go
As a Chinese Proverb states ‘Don’t try to eat cow in one bite’.Soft skills cannot be improved overnight.
